and the three major airports that service new york city. and for those people who aren't traveling, well, there are just a few hours left to get supplies before this potentially historic snowfall starts. a familiar scene playing out across new england, people grabbing supplies and food ahead of the storm. the only thing more popular than snow shovels and rock salt seem to be milk and bread. >> craziness as usual for a snowstorm. >> oh, it's crazy. it was a madhouse. >> i'm going to the liquor store. >> people are worried about the snow. i'm not worried about it. >> reporter: but officials in massachusetts are. the governor asked all nonemergency state workers to stay home today, urged all schools to close, and asked people to stay off the roads to allow the state's army of plow trucks to do their work. in addition to snow, the nor'easter is expected to churn up fierce waves and threatening coastal flooding. that could pose a major problem in areas around new york city that are still recovering from superstorm sandy. >> we can handle the snow. we just don't need a

to the west and go to northern new jersey and the new york city area notice the snow is gradually ending from the west to the east. central and eastern connecticut, you still have plenty of snow. it's not the case in eastern connecticut, rhode island, and the boston area and all of coastal maine, they're seeing occasional bouts of heavy snow. some of these bands are still pretty strong and that's going to continue to be the case for much of the morning. in fact, where you see the blue that's an additional 3 to 6 inches of snow could fall before the end of the day and that certainly does seem like that could be reasonable. >> how about the danger of flooding, especially in areas hit hardest by superstorm sandy, david? >> that's a good question. i know as far south as atlantic city during high tide we saw moderate coastal flooding and wash in that area. the winds now not only for the jersey shore and long island connecticut, now have it going offshore. the coastal flood warnings are confined along the massachusetts and maine shoreline. and, again, that should graduall

some live pictures as plows get ready to hit the streets in new york city. air travel is disrupted extending back to the bay area. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is at sfo with the latest numbers on cancellations there. cate, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. that storm is expected to set things back for thousands of travelers across the country. we know its already cancelled dozens of flights here out of sfo. two strong storms are expected to converge across the northeast. residents have just a few hours to prep their homes for what experts say could be a historic storm. new york could get up to a foot of snow and boston up to three feet. 3,000 flights along the east coast were canceled and we are seeing the effects here in the bay area. at sfo we have learned 52 flights were canceled for today. that's 35 departing and 17 arriving from boston, news, jfk and philadelphia. the last time we checked in with airport staff, they say there were no delays as a result of those cancellations. just a few moments ago i spoke with a couple of

. >>> another round of rain is moving through the bay area overnight. this is the city last night. let's get the latest from lawrence karnow. >> cold enough out there that i think we are going to see some snow. the sun comes up and it looks like snow across our mountains. it should be interesting this morning as we have some cold temperatures in place and showers beginning to sag a little bit further to the south right now. you can see it on our high-def doppler radar. some of that moisture really south of the golden gate bridge and becoming more widely scattered and i think that will be the case throughout the morning. still, you can see some pockets of moderate amounts of rainfall. you can see that along the 580 near dublin seeing good rainfall there maybe some more snow across the mountains too. snow level down to about 2500 feet. look at that. you can see all that cold air and low, you get an idea of the circulation as the system sags to the south. once it moves by the low will drag the moisture with it. we'll dry out in the afternoon. the temperatur

cancelled and public transportation in many cities is at a standstill but soum are making the most of being stuck in the storm. a snowball fighting flash mob erupted in the streets of boston tonight but for most people the storm is no fun at all. chief meteorologist has been watching it tracking it on high deaf doppler. paul. >> it's not just snow. it's the wind, and the wind has knocked out power to so many folks. this is a pretty significant problem out there. we had a weather system come down from the great lakes in canada. we had a different weather system come up from the gulf of moeks ko. where those two merged you get what's called a nor'easter. this time of near a nor'easter can be a significant snow maker. that's exactly what we have going on right now. we are talking about significant snowfall for the next 12 to 24 hours. in hartford, connecticut tonight, cbs report ir is reporting live and marly i would have to assume it is not just the intense snowfall, it is that wind you're getting some gusts up to 60 miles an hour. >> that's right. gusty winds here in hartford, connecticut, a

atlantic city to cape cod including boston. live picture in boston right now where winds are gusting at 40-mile-per-hour and snow coming down heavily and we have a blizzard and blizzard warnings in effect. here's a look at the storm. it's a huge strong low pressure area passing just to the south of the east coast passing just to the east of atlantic city. that means all the cold air is getting dragged down from canada but all the moisture is piling in from the atlanta. the i-95 corridor heavily traveled, philadelphia, new york, hartford, providence, boston, all going to see more than a foot of snow. the heaviest snow along the i- 95 corridor and i just saw a report of thundersnow being reported in providence. the big-time problems there of course getting in and out of there will be a huge problem especially when it comes to planes. roberta gonzales is at sfo with details on the flights. >> reporter: more than 60 flights were canceled here at sfo due to that potentially historic blizzard that's converging with a secondary storm system blasting through

ladies at a condominium at the city of big bear reported he confronted them tied them up held them hostage and stole two vehicles. now police are confident they have the right man. >> guys down! california. fairfield where the 13-year-old was murdered. the same city she lived with her foster family and where she used to live with her natural mom was in vallejo. josh allen is her birth father. >> what do you want to say to this guy that did that? >> you know, he is going to get what he deserves. >> reporter: 500 people lit candles where her naked body was discovered just one week ago. just a few hours after cops announced an arrest. >> no answer. the big question why. why didn't you leave her alone. and i hope you get what is coming to you. >> jones was identified early on as a suspect in this case. since that time he's been under 24 hour surveillance. no danger to the public. >> reporter: the suspected murderer is a barber by trade. these photos from the social networking site show him hard at work at the crown's barbershop in fairfield. one of the several places surrounded by yellow tape today. the section where he was arrested was also a crime scene. this is where the surveillance camera captured her image moments before being kidnapped.

bunker for nearly a week. mark strassmann is in midland city alabama w new details on the raid that ended with the death of the kidnaper. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. on ethan's birthday fbi bomb technicians will be back inside the bunker for looking for and removing improvised explosives. the body will stay at least until this bomb threat is over. >> we're here to celebrate answered prayer. >> reporter: they called it a praise vigil people in ethan's community gathering last night to give thanks the little boy was safely back with his mother. fbi photos show the exterior of the underground bunker. bomb technicians have removed two improvised explosives, one inside the bunker the other inside this pvc pipe that jimmy lee dykes used to talk to negotiators. the standoff ended monday when dykes climbed the eight-foot ladder to get supplies. as he reached up he was off balance and vulnerable. when dykes opened the door rescue team members dropped two stun grenades their loud noises and flashes disoriented. within seconds has members entered the bu

to move into kansas city where it's going to snow hard it looks like for about the entire day. our forecast models are showing that snow pivoting from the southwest to the northeast as we go throughout the morning and the afternoon hours, so wichita will see improvements late today, but northeast kansas and most of missouri we're going to be looking at heavy snowfall for the next at least 12 hours and how much more snow? look at this purple area anywhere in here we could be talking about maybe a foot maybe a little bit more than that. the snow rates are incredible this morning they're one to two inches per hour and it could snow like that for the next 6 to 12 hours in some locations. we don't want to forget about folks in the south from houston to new orleans the southern end of this storm, there's the potential for severe weather as we head later on into today. so it's bad news in the short term for travel but the good news is we have severe drought in the farmland areas of the midwest and this moisture is greatly needed and going to be greatly appreciated.
